Sabrina York on The Importance of Being Earnest…And Steamy Erotic Regencies

In my newest steamy erotic Regency, both Helena and James are pretending to be someone they’re not. Helena, because she’s running from an unwanted marriage and James because, well, he wants to seduce Helena. He pretends to be a lowly gardener.

This farce of identities was so much fun to write—my favorite part being when James realizes that his “Eloise,” the adorable waif who has become his perfect sexual partner and even enjoys his darkest fancy (yes, spankings!), is actually his intended. James is mortified. A Lord does not indulge his baser desires with a wife. Once they work everything out, Helena has to convince him, quite earnestly, that spankings are perfectly fine with her.

Needless to say, he’s pretty easy to convince…

I have attached the blurb and a steamy excerpt for your enjoyment. Dark Fancy is available on Amazonand at e-tailers everywhere.

In the meantime, check out Dark Fancy  on The USA Today Happy Ever After Blog!

Dark Fancy
By Sabrina York

When Lady Helena Eloise Simpson flees an unwanted marriage to a revolting lord, she finds refuge with James, a charming, handsome man unlike any she’s ever known. Helena concocts the perfect solution to her problem. She asks—begs—James to ruin her. Surely her betrothed will repudiate her if she is no longer pure. And if all her efforts fail and she still ends up married to a horrid man until the end of her days, she will—at least once—have known true passion.

But James is not all he seems. He is, in fact, a wicked lord with a dark fancy. When Helena awakens his desire, he becomes determined to take everything she has to offer and more. No matter the cost.

James stared at Eloise, brave, proud, innocent Eloise. He could relate to the passion in her plea. He had a sudden desire to be released from a betrothal himself. He fiddled with the corner of his napkin. “There is always the chance your betrothed won’t care if you’re ruined.” Some men did not.

Her lashes fluttered. When they rose again, there was a look in her eye that sent lust coursing down his spine. It settled in his cock. “If I’m to be married to a bilious flounder of a man for the rest of my life, I should like to know passion just once. Just once, James.”

“J-just once?” His voice cracked.

Her smile blossomed. “Perhaps more than once.”

He had to laugh, although this was clearly no laughing matter. “My dear. I would be happy to oblige.”

“Excellent!” She clapped her hands with glee.

Unfortunate, that, because it made her look, once again, like a little girl. But then she picked up her cup and ran her pink tongue around the rim, lapping at the wayward drops. He reached for the second bottle.

She held out her cup for a refill. “You will need to show me what to do.”

He almost forgot to stop pouring. Hell yes. He’d love to show her what to do. He’d love to instruct her—in elaborate detail—what, precisely, to do. Something snarled in his belly.  His palm itched.
He forced down that decadent desire. Chained the beast.

For God’s sake. She was an innocent, a virgin. If he opened with that card, not only would she truly be ruined, she would probably hie off to the nearest nunnery and spend the remainder of her life in seclusion.

Oh, he would bed her. He would despoil and beguile her, but only in the very gentlest of fashions.
But his fantasies, the darkling imagery of what he would truly like to do, simmered.

“Are you…” He cleared his throat. “Are you ready for your bath?”

“Heavens, yes.” Once again, she clapped her hands.

The childlike gesture was off-putting since, at the moment, he was thinking of sinking his cock into her body and swallowing her moans with his mouth. But he liked her enthusiasm. It also made him desire—very deeply—to tie those hands to the bedposts. So she couldn't clap them.
Why that thought made him salivate, he didn't know.

Ah hell. Of course he knew.

Despite the lust snarling through him, he managed a modicum of chivalry, although it was perfunctory at best. “I’ll fashion a curtain.”

Her next words nearly unmanned him. “You don’t need to.”

“I b-beg your pardon?”

“You don’t need to bother with a curtain.” For a shy and demure innocent, she had something of a brazen streak. “I mean, if we’re going to…you know…”

“Make love?”

“Yes. If we’re going to make love, you will see me naked anyway.” A frown crossed her brow. “Won’t you?”

He chuckled. “Most certainly.”

“I thought so. But people are not very forthcoming when one asks about such things.”

“Really?” That had not been his experience in the slightest. Then again, she was a girl. The world sought to save and protect innocence. Until it ravaged it.

He did not know why he trembled as he poured the heavy buckets into the tub. He was a man of the world. Jaded and used to much more decadent fare than initiating virgins to the delights of the flesh. He should hardly be nervous about the prospect of having her.

Then again, maybe it wasn't nerves. Maybe it was just pure, seething desire.

Fascinated with history or Why I LOVE COMANCHES!

Say what?
Yes, living in Texas and being a history nut, I have read a lot of the State’s history.  White, or as we say here, Anglo women were often stolen by the Comanche Indians and taken as hostages, prisoners and sometimes kept and made their wives.

Many Anglo children were captured by the local natives who became furious at the intrusion of the white man into his hunting and burial grounds. Then when cholera afflicted so many Indians and when measles and mumps felled thousands more, the natives stole children to replace the ones who had died. Many times, young women were abducted. Some were raped and scalped. Others, sadly, skinned. Yes. Had to be honest about it.  and taken to replace the wives the Indians had lost to death and disease.

In 1836, Cynthia Anne Parker, a 9 year old Anglo girl who grew up to marry a chief and bear him four sons and a daughter, was the first of these Anglos stolen. Texas Rangers, sheriffs and many local posses searched for the child for years. Not until she was an adult did her uncle take her back to her family. But once among them, she disliked the life and ran away. Yes, she returned to her Comanche husband.

Why did she return?

I venture to say she returned because she had been nurtured in that native environment and she felt out of place among her Anglo family and neighbors. Stories abound of white women and men who had been taken by Indians and returned, but were then shunned by their families and friends for their association.

Could she have loved her Comanche husband? Yes, she could have. We love what we know and what we revere. We also come to love the characteristics of a person, seeing beyond a person’s race or color or ethnicity.

But I will say that life among the Comanche was far from romantic. In my newest EC release, coming soon, STEAL ME AWAY, (no cover, no release date yet) I tell the story of an Anglo woman, Fancy Turner, stolen by a Comanche chieftain in the Hill Country of Texas in 1866.  Fancy knows Bull Elk because she has seen him at powwows among the Comanche and the settlers. She likes him for his willingness to come to a powwow. He speaks English and a bit of Spanish, as many did because they had to do so to get along with the Anglo and Tejano settlers.

He understands many of the Anglo customs and so he does not insist that Fancy have her blonde hair coated with bear grease on their wedding night. He is distressed for her when she cannot easily digest their meat-based diet. When she asks him to get peaches for her from the German farmers near Fredericksburg, he tells her he will have to steal them. Conflicted that he must take from her friends to help her, nonetheless she doesn’t stop him. She needs to eat fruit.

Yes, I have written a romance—an erotic one at that. I did make Bull Elk an Alpha male worthy of a woman who adores him. But he is also of his own culture.

And he is very heavily researched!

I hope you like him when he appears on the digital bookshelves. He is a good man, albeit not one of our time or our culture. He stole his wife, made her love him and kept her with the power of that.

We can forgive the man we love for many acts. Including stealing us from our pre-conceived notions of who we can and cannot love.

STEAL ME AWAY is the first of two historicals or prequels to my contemporary series, KNIGHTS IN BLACK LEATHER. The first two were ROPE ME IN and TIE ME DOWN, both western, multiple partner, light BDSM. Come and enjoy all the people in Bravado Texas where the men are good and plenty and all the women wear only a smile!

WHAT EVERY WRITER NEEDS....

Hello everyone,

Kelli Finger and Amy Atwell are two clever ladies. They're writers too and they know what we writers need to know. That in this hugely helpful in this ever-changing literary market, where indie publishing doesn't have the same 'stigma' attached to it, where indie authors are making big bucks - these two ladies know the business of writing.

You see when we sit down at the start of our writing career, all we're focused on is getting that story in our head down and of course selling it for a big fat check. However, what happens after we sell, or don't sell, or decide to go the indie route? Over the course of our writing careers we take so many classes (online or not) about the craftsmanship of writing, about GMC, POV and hooks and 1st sex scenes etc. But who teaches us about promo, about google ads, and copy editing, cover artists, about how to get your books maximum exposure for minimum buck, self-publishing and assessing our social media real estate.

There's so much to learn. Amy has put together a resource centre at Author EMS. This is the place where authors can find out what they need to know about the BUSINESS of writing. They teach courses on some of that other stuff like promo which we thought our publishers were going to do for us (ha ha ha) Anyway, beginning this year they've created a series of classes and Kelli is here to tell us all about them.

Kelli, tell us how you and Amy got together and what was the original impetus to start up Author EMS.
Thanks, Jane for having me here! I'm so happy to be given this opportunity to share this resource with you and your readers.  I've known Amy online since around 2009 when I joined the writing online author community Amy created.

Writing GIAM Www.writinggiam.com stands for goals, inspiration, amity and motivation. One part of GIAM involves posting a weekly recap of your goals and progress. I read Amy's recaps where she posted about her progress with her baby, AEMS around a year and a half ago. I emailed her privately in late 2011, asking if she needed help and she did. I started out as a volunteer.

I didn't officially start working for her until last summer when we really started digging in and brainstorming the workshops Amy had in her vision for the site. :) By then, she'd already started compiling the library on the site.

Author EMS is a resource center for writers. With the internet and world at our fingertips, why do you think this is necessary?
One thing Amy and I have discovered in this very short time is, using the internet is obviously great, but many people don't know how to organize all the links they have. Website links can be misplaced just like actual pieces of paper. Author E.M.S. puts everything in one place. Everyone has those days where they're so busy they don't have time to look something up or they can't find a particular link they bookmarked, so they lose that resource. For those who take advantage of the free membership offered by AEMS, you can save your favorite links and keep them until you need them.

This is a necessary feature especially for writers since there's so much out there for us to browse and take in. We strive to restore humanity and sanity to your virtual life as it says on the site. :)

I think the interesting thing I found while browsing your library was that really it is business basics, whereas most writers' sites feature the craft of writing. Was this a specific move on your part?
One factor that really drew me to working with Amy in this venture was that Author E.M.S. was going to be a site Specifically focused on the business aspect of writing. Amy and I have both been writing and learning for a long time. That's usually how writers go through their careers. They learn through mistakes and trial and error. There aren't many places where they can go find resources pertaining to the business of writing, to find help and guidance on decision-making without involving emotion in the picture. I loved the idea of helping other writers avoid making mistakes I've made during the course of my career.

That's what Author E.M.S. strives to do. And we do that by providing material that examines content from all angles. We don't tell authors what to do, but give them the facts and resources to make informed educated decisions for their careers.

Now, I'm in New Zealand, and of course business is done differently here, than in the US where you're based i.e. tax matters etc. Why and how do you think your information will benefit writers globally?
Ooh, excellent question! No matter where you live in the world you have to pay taxes. Or if you're self-publishing, you need to understand how to register your copyright. Self-publishing is a global business, though actually publishing a book involves more than simply uploading your book to distributors. Authors, no matter where in the world you live or how you publish your books need to understand business. If you're an author from New Zealand with a publisher located in the United states who has given you back rights to your books, did they register your books copyright?

If you're starting a business, there's specific criteria you must adhere to depending on where you live. Take registering your book for copyright again as an example. There are different guidelines in every country that make the process slightly different. We provide links for students both in the United States and elsewhere for starting a business and registering copyright.  Teaching these classes has been a learning experience for us too. We learned firsthand how those in New Zealand can obtain an ISBN for their books for free after doing some extra digging on Amy's part.

We help explain stuff that might make many authors nervous. Stuff like copyright and ISBNs, self-publishing this stuff that would make you want to run away or simply leave it to your agent because it's too hard to be bothered to learn. We don't buy that. Authors today must be completely versed in their careers—from the writing to promoting to publishing. Today's successful author understands business.

I notice you mention about membership of AEMS - how does this operate?
Membership is free. Our classes, the online reviewer database, and the digital formatting and uploading to Apple's iTunes store are paid services.

Tell us a bit about the courses you're offering?
Beginning on March 3rd and running until the 16th, we're teaching Creating a Book Launch Plan. This course is for any author who has a book coming out, or for those authors who need to brush up on effective ways to promote their books.

In April, we're beginning our next Virtual Real Estate Assessment, VREA, where students will evaluate their own and their fellow students online presence. The VREA courses last for six months. The first week is very intensive. During the rest of the course, students are expected to implement what they've learned in class and apply it to their social media profiles and web pages.

In May, we're offering our month-long course, Intro to Your
Self-Publishing Business, where we discuss everything from starting a business, copyright and ISBNs, cover art, hiring and working with freelancers, and distribution options.

Thanks to Kelli (And Amy) This is a great resource for we writers, and the feedback I have had from several people I know who’ve done the class in January was that it was extremely worth while.

February Flying

For such a short month, February was really busy.

It started with a radio interview set up by sister writer, Cindy Sample, on our local public radio station. Beth Ruyak, well known to Sacramento TV watchers and radio listeners, interviewed Cindy and me. Beth had a variety of guests, the first several discussing gun control, which made some listeners hot under the collar. Cindy and I built some heat of a different sort.

If you’d like to hear the interview, here’s the link: Radio Interview – Fifty Shades of Romance

Then, the Sunday before Valentine’s Day, we met up with two more authors from the Sacramento Valley Rose Chapter of Romance Writers of America. We talked about the different kinds of romance and how the genres have grown and are continuing to grow. Had a pretty good turn out and sold some books.

Catch the panel discussion at: http://www.youtube.com/MarketPlaceFolsom
From left to right: Cindy Sample, Dee Brice, Donna del Oro, and Paisley Fitzpatrick.

My publisher, Ellora’s Cave, is offering the first book in my Passion’s Treasures series for free. You may download the e-book from: http://www.ellorascave.com/passion-s-four-towers.html The freebie is on until March 3, 2013.

And then…tomorrow (heavy sigh) we’re having our income taxes computed. Oh well, oh dear. Guess everyday can’t be filled with roses and chocolates—no matter how hard I wish.

Have a wonderful rest of the month and may March fulfill all your wishes.

Time for Some Hot Turks!

...and some SWEET prizes....

I will be "on tour" as we say for the next 2 weeks promoting my TURKISH DELIGHTS series....so, you Sweet 'N Sassy types get the first glimpse of the fun!

The Turkish Delights series began as 3 "1Night Stand" short stories for Decadent Publishing, about 3 siblings in one blended Turkish/American family.  Emre and Tarkan (twin young men) and their sister Lale (pronounced "Lah-ley") have been through a fair bit of trauma once you meet them. I felt their backstory compelling enough, and luckily so did Decadent so I wrote a prequel: The Diplomat's Daughter. Then, because there was a tempting, dangling plot string, I tied that up with the final novella: Flower Passage.

That was last year.

This year, Decadent has provided me with a couple of new fun opportunities to market this series "all in one."  The ebook bundle is available on Amazon, and is currently FREE to Kindle Prime members. Check back tomorrow though, as we have a surprise for non-KDP members for the week!  This amazing bundle of stories will be FREE TO EVERYONE beginning 2/25/13!  Truly a great way to get into a unique set of stories.

Also, if you are are a fan of the printed word, the entire series is available under one beautifully designed cover and frankly, this way, reads like a long, juicy novel.

I lived in Istanbul for a couple of years with my family. It is an incredible place. In the coming days you will find me visiting many cool blogs and reviews sites chatting about my years there, the adventures both good and bad, and various other tidbits about the Deniz family. IF you are paying attention, at the last stop on March 10 (www.decadentpublishing.blogspot.com) you can win:
1.  signed print copy of Turkish Delights
2. $50 from Amazon (which will allow you to obtain the rest my backslist...ya know you want it)
IF you answer 5 questions correctly, answers of which can be found back in the posts from the tour stops.

There is a bonus question which could net you your very own BEER WENCH TEE SHIRT from my brewery!

If there is more than person who gets all the answers correct, I will choose a winner randomly from those.

This is gonna be fun guys! I'll have exclusive entire chapter excerpts scattered around in the posts as well!

series blurb:

A young American woman comes face to face with her destiny in Istanbul in the 1960's and an epic dynasty is born.

When Vivian Kinkaid turns around in her college classroom and makes eye contact with a man who was once her forbidden childhood friend, her life is changed forever.

A sweeping saga of family, love, loss and recovery—The Turkish Delight series begins with a special sort of magic. Then  Madame Eve works her miracles for the Deniz family, but even she can’t overcome the harsh realities that force this Turkish/American family all to deal with tragedy when one of their own is ripped from their close-knit circle.

“The Turks” opens with best-selling classic romance for the ages.  Then ends with a thrilling novella that brings all the players back together.  Set in Istanbul, Las Vegas, and Southern California, The Turkish Delights series has it all—heat, heart, intrigue and a deep, family connection that transcends all barriers.
