Unending Desire is up for Book of the Year at LASR!!!

What an honor - this is especially exciting for me as Unending Desire is Book One of my very first series Outlawed Realm (erotic paranormal)!

Voting continues at LASR (Long and Short Romance Reviews) until February 14th at this link: http://www.longandshortreviews.com/book-reviews/2012-book-of-the-year/

Blurb:
His hunger for one woman will make him a traitor to his world…
Outlawed Realm, Book 1
From a portal in his lab on E2, one of the five dimensions of Earth, quantum physicist Nikoli Zorr gazes on everything forbidden to him. Passion. Desire. The exquisite pleasure of running his hands over the lush curves of a young woman he should have stopped watching weeks ago.
His duty is to close the portals that keep the monsters out of E2—and never interfere with the inevitable fate of those on the other side. Yet he can’t bring himself to abandon the woman who has captured his soul.
Psychologist Regina Page is trying to keep her mind on her client, and off the mysterious, unbearable sexual cravings that consume her when she’s alone in her bedroom. The next moment she’s attacked by vampires, then swept into another realm by a stranger whose touch awakens that same raw desire. Whose eyes are already filled with farewell.
Yet beneath their undeniable carnal lust, something else stirs. The beginnings of illicit love. The unexpected need to protect him. Even if it means risking body, blood and soul to defeat the merciless horde…for a future that was never meant to be.

PRODUCT WARNINGS
Contains a repressed scientist who likes to look, and the woman who delights in unleashing his inner caveman. And sex hot enough to burn a hole in all three dimensions…and maybe create a whole new one.

Excerpt:
Undetected, Nikoli Zorr watched the woman sleep.
His heartbeat continued to quicken, sending waves of warmth through his body. He whispered her name.
“Regina Page.”
A surge of pleasure weakened Nikoli’s limbs, awakening desire controlled for too long, giving him a taste of what it was like to be nothing more than a man. A creature of touch, taste, sight, sound, passion. Heat built in his groin. Desire flooded his thoughts.
Behind him and to each side, monitors hummed, their lights blinking in response, reminders of his duty.
Too easily, Nikoli ignored his responsibility and dared to whisper her first name again, testing the feel of it on his lips, embracing the sound, his attention riveted to the scene the portal between their dimensions revealed.
Pearly morning light seeped past her bedroom’s filmy curtains. A steady rain greeted another Seattle morning, the water flowing in uneven ridges down the window’s glass.
Regina’s dark lashes rested on her smooth cheeks. Her plush lips, tinted a soft rose, were parted slightly, her lovely features untroubled.
Nikoli sensed she wasn’t dreaming. He knew she had no idea of the danger she faced tonight.
His chest tightened at the horror of what today would bring to her if he didn’t intervene. Events Sazaar had put into motion weeks before when she’d crossed over to Regina’s side—a realm forbidden to all on E2. Searching for passion…for love…Sazaar had found Andris and a lingering death instead.
Before fear and anger got the better of him at what Sazaar had done, Nikoli suppressed his emotions just as he’d been trained to do throughout his life. Only yearning for Regina remained. He couldn’t help himself. He didn’t want to.
He regarded her lush mouth, the inviting temptation of her lips, the delicate sweep of her cheek, slender brows, her auburn hair brushed away from her cheek, the ends spilling over her snowy pillow and the side of the mattress. His lids slid down to narrow slits. He craved her as he had nothing else in his life. No, it hadn’t been a life but an existence. And now he realized what he’d missed, wanting her more than food, water, safety or honor.
Wanting her to be with him.
Images unwound in Nikoli’s mind of Regina straddling his body, draping her torso over his, the firm tips of her nipples brushing his chest, her reddish locks sweeping past his shoulders. In his thoughts, he saw her face above his, her smile welcoming, seductive, her passion free and reckless as she edged closer, teasing the seam of his lips with her tongue, spearing the hot, wet tip into his mouth, filling it, exploring.
A sound he’d never made before escaped Nikoli’s throat. He focused on the picture his thoughts created, building upon the scene. He could almost feel the intense heat of her body, a place of delight and refuge where he could—
A sudden, steady wail cut through the space between their dimensions, chasing the scenes from his mind. Her alarm clock continued to shriek, the noise subdued on this side by the portal’s barrier.
Eyes still closed, Regina flung her arm to the clock, her fingers fumbling blindly to shut off the noise. Nikoli smiled at her muffled oath. He watched as she threw back the covers and left the bed.
On tiptoes, arms lifted above her, she stretched, her movements supple and sinuous. Nikoli swallowed. He stared at her dark green nightgown, the hem fluttering above her satiny thighs. Raindrops zigzagged down the window, creating faint shadows on her pale skin.
He pulled his attention from them, watching the ends of Regina’s hair dangling past her shoulders.
Without thinking, Nikoli reached out, his hand seeking the glossy strands, his fingers touching nothing but sterile air. Air hissed through his teeth.
Arms lowered, Regina slipped the nightgown’s narrow straps past her shoulders. The silky fabric slid over the gentle swell of her breasts, catching briefly on her nipples before drifting to her waist.
Partially bared, she turned her face to the window, the dreary day.
Focused on her ripe flesh, Nikoli told himself he should turn away, knowing he would not. He feasted on her beauty, the succulent contours of her breasts, full and weighty, large enough to fill a man’s hands. His. He regarded the curve of her belly, the lavish flare of her hips.
Regina wiggled them, encouraging her nightgown to fall past her thighs and pool at her feet. Stepping out of the garment, she grabbed her hair in both hands, twisting then lifting the locks from her shoulders.
Nikoli’s mouth went dry. He forced down a swallow as he regarded the delicate curls between her legs, slightly darker than her other hair. Her belly rippled each time she inhaled. After a brief yawn, she turned and padded toward the bath.
Unwilling to bear even more separation between them, Nikoli stepped closer to the gateway.
With his movement, Regina stopped, releasing her hair. The strands swished left and right, exposing then hiding her shoulders. Turned to the side, she glanced at the window. The ashy light caressed her features, revealing her confusion.
She’d felt him. She still did.
Nikoli waited for Regina’s next move.
A second ticked by. Then another. And another.
She lowered her face, glancing at the hardwood floor.
Again, he stepped closer.
She went completely still, then turned facing the portal that Nikoli knew was invisible from her side. There, Regina would see nothing more than the wall of her bedroom, the pictures she’d hung.
Here, the gateway resembled a wall of glass, allowing him to watch her without restriction. To see what he should not, to want what he wasn’t allowed to have. Didn’t matter. No rule could stop the longing coursing through him, followed by insatiable lust.
Color rose to her cheeks. Desire transformed her features.
“I feel it too,” he murmured.

Check out what over a THOUSAND other writers have read

My recent blog post at Savvy Authors is a certified hit with 1003 1049 views thus far - wow!

I posted about the joys and perils of series writing, relating my sometimes rocky road in plotting and keeping everything straight. :)

What kind of series do you prefer?

Although I'm addicted to TV series (think Grey's Anatomy, House, Suits, etc.), I haven't read many books that are a part of a series. The exception would be murder mysteries where the heroine/hero solve new crimes in each offering. Somehow, that genre just lends itself to a continuing flow of stories with the same characters.

What I'm talking about here are series with different heroines/heroes in each book (not necessarily sequels) with a unifying theme. The books can be stand alones, but they are also interconnected.

Take my Outlawed Realm series for example.

Unending Desire, Book One, introduces us to Nikoli Zorr and Regina Page, both inhabitants of earth but from different dimensions on it. The erotic romance is part sci-fi, part paranormal, totally hot. :)

In Illicit Desire, Book Two, Lukan and Arez, pleasure slaves from E4 (the fourth dimension on Earth) are introduced. Nikoli and Regina are also in the book, they're integral to the plot, but they aren't its hero/heroine any longer. They're secondary characters. Lukan and Arez are in the spotlight.

Book Three, which my editor has just accepted, introduces a new heroine/hero. The other characters (Regina, Nikoli, etc.) are still a part of the ongoing story, but again, they aren't the stars.

My second series, Appointment with Pleasure, began with the erotic contemporary romance Claiming Magique. The story of Hunt and Alexa, a call girl like no other. She calls herself Magique.

These two are still a part of Book Two, which I'm working on now. However, they're no longer the stars, but secondary characters.

My third series, The Prophecy, begins with Come Fill Me which will be pubbed this December. An erotic paranormal, this is a story about a man and woman with otherworldly powers engaged in a life-and-death struggle with each other's clans in the American southwest. The tagline reads - Two men will stop at nothing to have her gift, her desire...and her love. Yes, parts of it are a menage. However, unlike my other two series this one focuses on the original hero/heroine throughout the other books.

So, which kind of series do you like best or do you even have a preference between those that have new stars or those with the same characters in different plots? Do you begin to tire of those well-known heros/heroines after awhile, no matter how exciting the story may be? Or do you miss beloved favorites when new heroines/heros come along and take their place?

Make mine SEXY...

I confess, I adore Alpha heros. Love those rippling muscles, smoldering looks, wet/deep/hard kisses.

This month I have THREE (yeah, THREE) releases that have Alpha heros to die for. Strong and decisive, yet tender when it comes to their ladies. Here are the covers/blurbs/links. :)

A man at the center of power…a woman who won’t be ruled…

They call her Magique.

Lobbyist Hunter Prescott was only looking for a good time, not a woman who unleashes a hunger so deep it changes his world. He won’t stop until Magique is his alone, a prisoner of his lust, powerless against his growing need for her body and heart.

With this man, resistance isn’t allowed. For this woman, he’ll create a world of sensual delight and yearning like none she’s known. Proving that only with trust and true surrender will she find unparalleled rapture.

He left his heart behind with Arez. Within her fragrant, heated caress, he knew everything denied him. Rapture, contentment, tenderness…and love. Desperate to have her back in his arms, he embarks on a dangerous mission to deliver his untamed temptress from the certain death she does not know awaits her.

Within her velvet cage Arez knew only carnal submission and loneliness—until Lukan. But he has disappeared, and she senses something different in the way the supreme ruler is using her. Then, as if Lukan felt her longing for his strong arms and fevered kisses, he is there to sweep her from this twilight dimension to another.

But true freedom lies just out of his grasp To reach the last portal—and their destiny—Lukan and Arez must first outwit an army of predators that hunt them. Human, subhuman…and monsters.

Unending Desire receives LASR’s coveted BEST BOOK rating!!

I’m so excited. LASR (Long and Short Reviews) Erotic has rated Unending Desire as Best Book!!

The review reads in part:

“I won’t give away the details of this suspenseful and captivating story, but I must say that there is not a moment in it that isn’t wonderful and thrilling. The worlds are painted with precision and eloquence. The scenes describing the vampires are chilling and appropriately horrific, setting the story’s stage and creating the urgent suspense and danger required to make the plot believable and engrossing. The love and need between Nikoli and Regina is beautifully portrayed and supported by their well told pasts. Their deep passion sizzles the ink right off the pages.

“This is a book not to be missed. Tina Donahue has done amazing work that shines way above and beyond the average. The erotic scenes are so hot and the love affair so compelling that I couldn’t put the book down. If you love exciting paranormal-adventure romance with a generous dose of erotic action, pick up a copy of, Unending Desire. I recommend it enthusiastically!”

Romance is hard

As all romance writers know, our genre is hugely popular. Sales exceed many of the more respected genres even during these tough economic times. Despite the health of the romance industry and its countless fans, our writing is often denigrated as so much fluff. Woman's stuff, you know. Not quite as good as what a guy would do in a legal thriller, horror story or the great American novel.

Bull.

Anyone who's ever penned a romance can tell you it is one of the hardest - if the not the absolute hardest - genres to write. Why? Because we can't have car chases, gun fights, macho posturing, blood, gore and plot mechanics take the place of  deep POV. We're required to get past the character's actions and dialogue into his or her head, heart and soul. Without it, a romance won't sell.

For those of you who are still skeptical, allow me to explain what I mean.

In a romance, the feelings of the hero and heroine must be conveyed effectively to the audience so they laugh, weep, cheer and smile right along with the characters. Think that's easy? Hah! Think again. In the past, I rewired an entire house, bringing it up to code, and found that less daunting than writing a deeply emotional scene.

Getting into a character's head is as difficult as getting into your own or your significant others' thoughts. No matter how emotional we think we are, we're all also guarded to some extent. We hold back. We don't want to admit what's really bothering us.

Characters are the same. Therefore, our writing has to convey this complexity. Not only is the hero angry, there's deep hurt and fear beneath it. And while the heroine is forgiving, there's also a thread of distrust and resentment because of what she's endured.

Through actions, words and their thoughts, we have to show what makes them tick. Believe me, it's easier to write about a bomb exploding and body parts flying than to have a hero face a woman who holds his future in her hands. The subtleties involved in that kind of writing come with an enormous amount of hard work. And pulling tears from a reader takes a lot of talent.

For those that dismiss romance, I can only guess that emotions frighten them. Otherwise, they'd sit back and enjoy one of the most satisfying genres known.

***** Great news!!! I've just contracted another title - SiNN - with Ellora's Cave. It's my first romantic suspense and also my first menage. It's slated for their Breathless line. As soon as I have the cover art, I'll share it along with a blurb and excerpt.

Also, my erotic paranormal Unending Desire is coming out from Samhain October 18. Next month, I'll share the cover, blurb and excerpt. :)

What's Your Fav in Fantasy, Sci Fi and Paranormal?

Now that I've taken the plunge into writing paranormals with my first, The Yearning, a bestseller; and my next Unending Desire set to release in October, I wanted to reflect on the paranormal, scifi and fantasy stories I've loved.  Here's my list:

1. Dark City

OMG, this was such a unique and amazing film. Starring Rufus Sewell (what a hottie) it's unlike anything I've ever seen. Here's an abbreviated synopsis from Rotten Tomatoes: "Separated from his wife Emma (Jennifer Connelly), amnesiac John Murdoch (Rufus Sewell) awakens alone in a strange hotel to learn he is wanted for a series of brutal killings -- but he can't remember if he did or didn't commit these murders. Indeed, most of his memories have completely vanished, and he becomes the focus of interest for both mad genius Dr. Schreber (Kiefer Sutherland) and sympathetic detective Frank Bumstead (William Hurt). Attempting to unravel the twisted riddle of his identity, Murdoch encounters a group of ominous beings known as the Strangers, shadow-like figures who have a collective memory and possess the ability to stop time and alter physical reality through a process called The Tuning."

2. The Matrix

Honestly, I can watch this movie again and again. Sure, Keanu Reeves has the acting ability of a post of wood, but for this story it works. For anyone who hasn't seen this (the one or two beings on earth who let it pass them by), this is about machines taking over Earth and using people as their fuel. God - that scene with Keanu in a pod hooked up to generators was frightening.

3. Gattaca

I cried at many parts of this exceptional movie. I felt Ethan Hawke's fear, frustration and longing for something better deep in my soul. This wasn't a blockbuster like The Matrix, but its story was so much deeper, so very human. I urge everyone who loves a good love story - an exceptionally crafted human story - to rent this film. Here's an abbreviated synopsis from Rotten Tomatoes: "this science fiction drama, set in a future when one's life is determined by genetic engineering rather than education or experience. The wealthy can choose the genetic makeup of their descendants. People are designed to fit into whatever role is decided before birth. But what happens when someone desires another way of life? Citizens in this impersonal future-world are fashioned as perfect specimens, so those in the natural-born minority are viewed as inferior to the pre-planned perfect specimens (aka "Valids") who dominate. One of the natural-borns (aka "In-Valids"), Vincent Freeman (Ethan Hawke), has several defects (poor vision, emotional problems, and short 30-year life expectancy), but he also develops a different outlook on his pre-ordained fate. He yearns to break free from society's constraints, and he dreams of a journey into space as a Gattaca Corp. navigator."

4. Jurassic Park

WOW - 'nuff said.  :)

5. Somewhere in Time

For the sheer romance,  this movie cannot be beat. It was lush, romantic and had me weeping like a baby during a good deal of it. The scene where Jane Seymour is crossing the lawn at the grand hotel and Christopher Reeve watched her stirred me in ways I hadn't imagined. The music was beautiful, the anticipation of them meeting exquisite. When she turned suddenly, looking at him, then said, "Is it you?" OMG, I just about died. There isn't a strong enough word to describe the romance in this movie. Simply breathtaking. Unfortunately, it wasn't a huge success. I found it on video years after it had come out. You really need to see this. Here's an abbreviated synopsis from Rotten Tomatoes: "A young playwright, Richard Collier (Reeve), is approached by an elderly woman on the occasion of his first triumph in 1972 -- all she says to him is "Come back to me" and leaves him with a watch that contains a picture of a ravishing young woman. Eight years later, he visits the Grand Hotel on Mackinac Island and comes upon a photograph of the same woman, whom he discovers was an actress who made an appearance at the hotel in 1912. He becomes obsessed with the image and what the woman -- who died the night she approached him in 1972 -- meant by what she said. In a manner somewhat reminiscent of the film Laura, he falls in love with her and her image as he learns more about her life and career. Then he comes upon the suggestion of a professor at his former college that time travel may, in fact, be possible, using an extreme form of self-hypnosis to free the person from the place they occupy in the time-stream. Collier's feelings for the woman are so strong that he succeeds, bringing himself back to the hotel in 1912 on the eve of her triumph. He meets the actress, Elise McKenna (Jane Seymour), and the two fall in love."

Rounding out the top ten are:

6. Bladerunner - amazing - A+++++
7. Terminator - loved it - A+++++
8. 2001 - A Space Odyssey - made me want to be an astronaut - no fooling - A++++++
9. Back to the Future - so cute and different - A++++++
10. Planet of the Apes - wow, what an ending - A+++++

You'll note I left off Star Wars. I do believe I'm the only person on Planet Earth who never liked any of those films. They just seemed too cartoony to me...no real depth to the characters.

So there's my list - do you agree? Disagree? Let's hear what you like best.  :)
