In a romance, the leading characters share a spark they aren’t able to experience with anyone else. F/M, F/F, M/M, MFM or any combination thereof, a quality kiss signals to those involved that they belong together. Is the perfect kiss a flight of fancy that can only be realized in the pages of a novel, screenplay, movie or (if you’re really, really lucky) in real life? Or, is the explanation to be found in warm hard (pun intended) science?
I’m sure it depends on who you ask. I went searching for scientific answers to explain the perfect kiss and stumbled upon some very interesting facts. In her book, The Science of Kissing: What Our Lips Are Telling Us, Sheril Kirshenbaum reports that kissing releases a sort of chemical cocktail in our brains. Dopamine, oxytocin, serotonin norepinephrine and epinephrine all contribute to a stellar kiss.
Have you ever felt high after being kissed? That’s the neurotransmitter dopamine and it can be quite addictive. During a kiss, oxytocin increases in the body creating feelings of attachment and bonding. Serotonin influences feelings of obsession with your partner and norepinephrine contributes that weak knee feeling. Every great kiss should speed up your heart rate and make you sweat, at least a little. This is a sign of epinephrine at work in your body.
Heck, men even transfer testosterone to their partners during a kiss. This helps to prime their make out buddy for more sexy high jinks post kiss. I guess when people say, “We have great chemistry,” they aren’t kidding.
So when you’re describing the hot, weak limbed, can’t get enough closeness you experience during and after kissing your significant other to a best girl or guy friend- for the tenth time- you can also explain that your preoccupation is completely natural.
What is the best part of a kiss for you? Is it excitement, closeness, breathless jitters or some other aspect of a kiss that makes it perfect? Leave a comment. I would love to discuss kiss perfection with you.
