Where Did Our Curiosity Go?

Were you alive back when President Kennedy ensured that the U.S.A. reached the moon before the U.S.S.R.?  I remember being in grade school and seeing news reports of a renewed emphasis on Science and Math in U.S. schools, and how the entire nation was gripped with excitement, breathlessly following the reports of trial and error so inherent to scientific exploration of the space beyond our own tiny ball of mud and water in space.  I remember thinking that if we could have astronauts walking on the moon and I was just a kid in elementary school, imagine where astronauts would be walking once I was an adult!
So now, almost 50 years later, where are we walking?  Not on the moon anymore.  Not on any other planets.  And if you ask most people what's going on with NASA and the space exploration programs, you will get blank stares or heated lectures on how we need to stop funding such "nonsense" and instead put tax money to work solving the problems we've created for ourselves here on our home planet. "After all," the speaker will opine piously, "What benefits have we ever gotten from wasting all of that money on the space program?"
Indeed.  Just thinking off the top of my head, I can name things we take for granted like Velcro, thin fabrics that hold heat in without bulk, disposable diapers, dehydrated foods, microwaves, and technology so small that the computers that used to fill entire rooms with punch-cards and moving dials, are now held in the palm of a hand while toddlers play endless on-line games to keep themselves amused while Mom and Dad ignore each other to text other people or surf the web while they wait for their fast food in the restaurant.
In his book, The Demon-Haunted World, http://www.goodreads.com/book/show/17349.The_Demon_Haunted_World, Carl Sagan talks about being a passenger in taxis all over the country, and invariably if the driver recognized him, he would be asked his opinion of the various "scientific" ideas the driver was interested in...things like, "Did aliens really land here in the 40s and their bodies and technology are being kept secret from us?", and "How can you say there's no such thing as magic and ESP?  I just read in (name any national tabloid) about someone who can..."
And Carl Sagan would sigh heavily, sometimes attempting to explain that these things are all the work of charlatans, and that if the person really is interested in science, they should try reading about what NASA is doing these days, about the exciting things being discovered through our participation on the International Space Station, or the miracles of modern medicine discoveries, etc.  At that point the driver would invariably get angry or quiet, upset that the famous Carl Sagan really didn't know anything about "science" after all...at least not about the stuff he was interested in.
The statistics these days tell us that the U.S. is 14th in the world in student achievement in Science, and 18th in Math.  This, from a country that used to lead the world!  But I'll bet today's students can all identify "Honey Boo-Boo", and navigate quickly on their smart phones to the Twitter feed from the Kardashians, which they follow religiously.  Sigh.
Years ago Eleanor Roosevelt said, "Simple minds talk about other people.  Average minds talk about events.  Great minds talk about ideas."  Yet here we are, in the western world, many of us taking for granted the knowledge of the whole of humanity available on the internet, and what is the primary use for this access?  Downloading extreme porn and chatting on social networks about other people.
All of my observations here are to introduce the second of my Mayan Vampire novels, Mayan Prophecy Fulfilled.  What?  How can a fiction novel, an erotic vampire romance at that, have anything to do with such lofty ideas?  In my fictional world of these two novels, I present a reason that curiosity has faded in humanity, and why despite our inherent desire to learn, instead we wallow in the ordinary, celebrate the sub-human (hello, reality TV), and more people vote for American Idol than vote for the U.S. President.  In my books, the aliens that visited our planet before brought vampirism with them, along with directions: encourage humanity to propagate, but don't let it evolve so far that independent space travel is achieved.  Keep the masses well-fed but dumbed-down, so they won't present any problem when the aliens return in 5,000 years to take more humans back to their planet with them.
The first book, Prophecy of the Undead, introduced my ideas.  The second book, Mayan Prophecy Fulfilled, ends with the aliens returning to find a world changed in ways they didn't expect.

And to answer my question about Curiosity, that's the name of the space exploration vehicle currently sending back spectacular data from Mars.  Go to this site to watch some interesting short videos explaining various issues about space travel.  The one I've linked to is the one from NASA telling us why the planet didn't end on December 21, 2012, at the end of the Mayan long-count calendar's 13th Baktun.

Mayan Prophecy Fulfilled

Recently some authors have been talking about sequels...about how once you write "the end", sometimes the starring characters of that book are done telling their stories, but the supporting characters  want to continue.  I've written two series' like that, with the earlier "starring characters" still involved with subsequent stories but in supporting roles.

With Prophecy of the Undead, which was inspired by two separate dreams, I thought I was done with the story when I was writing the last chapter.  Then I began to imagine how to tie up the loose ends that in retrospect were obviously crying out for resolution.  I soon began the first chapter of Mayan Prophecy Fulfilled.  As with my other series books, you can read each one independently but you will get a more interesting experience if you read them in order.

At the end of Prophecy of the Undead, Keisha and Yuri are enlisting the aid of vampires he knows to help them convince those who control the world behind the scenes that the human race should not be dumbed-down any further before the return of the alien vampires who brought across to blood-drinking humans in many cultures on their last visit.  They took many humans back to their planet with them the last time, and promised to return for more humans in 5,000 years when their planet would once again be aligned with the Earth.  Vampires must decide if they have any skin in the game, since many feel that losing a few thousand humans would be good for the worldwide population and not hurt them in any way.

Keisha and Yuri receive help in their quest from a most unexpected source: a tall, blue-skinned alien covered with darker blue fur, who tells them to call him "Frank".  He is from a race of eternal beings that call themselves "Visitors" because they visit planets all around the universe to help nudge evolution along so that each planet's dominant species can venture out into space and achieve their birthright as star travelers.  But first they need to convince Niu Ying, a Chinese female vampire with a chip on her shoulder, that she should care about the human race.

Blurb:
As a gifted child she was given to the state by her Chinese parents, leading to a harsh life.  Her un-dead existence has been worse.  When other vampires urge her not to further the destruction of humans, they bring a blue-skinned alien Visitor. She never expected to discover her own humanity in the arms of an alien; he never expected to fall in love.  Can their passion bridge the gap between their races?  And can they join forces to face the return of the Mayan aliens and save humanity?

Mayan Prophecy Fulfilled will be available on Friday, February 1, 2013 from Eternal Press at: http://www.eternalpress.biz/.
You can also find my books at the usual sources, like Amazon, Barnes and Noble, All Romances eBooks, CoffeeTime Romance, etc.

Those naughty bits...what do you call them ?

I'm not trying to be flippant here.  I'm really wondering.  I've read humorous blogs on this topic that listed the most outrageous purple prose that the writers had ever read.  It was hilarious reading all of the euphemisms that writers had used to describe a handful of body parts.

Some of my favorites?
Male part: Manroot, purple tulip, turgid rod, rampant manhood, and throbbing pole/shaft/etc.
Female part: Quivering quim., slick love grotto, passion-bedewed portal,  honeypot,  love canal,  etc.  Other important female part: Love button, nubbins, pearl of pleasure. Other two female parts: Alabaster mounds, twin peaks of pleasure.
Sigh.  You get the picture.
But what's an author to do?  It ruins the mood if you go all clinical and describe his erect penis rubbing her vulva, before entering her vagina.  Sounds like a medical program...maybe Makeus Sexy, MD?

The reason I'm even thinking about this is because I just read a book that kept using a term for the female part, c***,  repeatedly in very hot, very long and descriptive sex scenes.  I'm sorry, but that drew me out of the scenes way too much!  I've used that word myself as a swear word when I'm really aggravated, and most females I know get agitated even hearing it used that way.  They give me shocked looks at my being so bold as to swear "like a Marine".  I learned to swear at my Mama's knee, and from her brothers who had all been in the army during WWII.  They all swore magnificently, with great flourishes of nastiness and humor.  And from my Dad who was in the British Army where swearing was raised to an art form.

But to use a word that has such a negative connotation in a sex scene that is supposed to be getting me all hot and bothered?  Nope...ruined the mood.  How about you?  Are there any particular words that will make you look away from the book and say, "Ew!"?

My latest release, Prophecy of the Undead, is now available. There are sex scenes, but after having read some other erotic books I feel that mine are romances with erotic bits, rather than erotica.  My sex scenes are not the focus of the story.  They happen then we go back to character development and the plot.  Sex is only a part of why my heroine and hero fall in love.  But it is too important of a part not to include.  I just hope I avoid anything that might make you say, "Ew!" Or giggle.

What Kind of Vampires Do You Like?

So there are the traditionalists, who read Bram Stoker's saga Dracula years ago, and found the idea of a walking corpse that survived by drinking blood to be horrifying.  They are the ones who love Nosferatu, the movie, with the creepy guy with the long fingernails, since nails are supposed to continue to grow for a while after death.  He was made up to look like a rat, with pointy teeth and a feral look to his face.

Then there are the folks who favor Bela Lugosi's Dracula, which he portrayed in so many movies that he got to believing he was going to become undead, so he had himself buried in his tux and cape. Of course his drug addiction might have contributed to that delusion.  But still, his "Come...he-ah", has to reign as one of the most memorable lines in any of his vampire movies.  And the women under his spell always went to him, only to be terrified and ashamed the next morning, when their boyfriends would confront them with the evidence that they were allowing the Count to take liberties with them at night.  (Euphemism for sex, much?)  But still, in those movies, the vampires only took blood from the heroines...and even the female vampires were only seeking hemoglobin, not he-men parts.

Anne Rice's vampires were compelling.  I read her first vampire book when I was in college, and the second book didn't come out until I had been out of college almost 10 years.  She has vampires discuss in one of her books, the question of: If you could live forever would you improve--becoming a better person eventually?  Or would you just become even more set in your ways, so that if you were a self-centered jerk in life, you'd be an even bigger jerk in immortality?  Her vampires were fascinating creatures...human, but not quite.  They could savor the pleasure of being alive forever, tempered with the knowledge that they were not allowed to enjoy 2 of the pleasures most humans wouldn't willingly give up: 1)food and drink, which I could give up, and 2)sex...definitely not! To cope with that shortfall, she wrote lots of vampire sagas that delved into the past of many of her vampires...back to a time when they were still mortal and having lots of sex.  But always they had to return to the present and being eunuchs forever.  Not the kind of immortality I'd choose!

On the opposite end of the spectrum, Laurell Hamilton's vampires don't think of much else...and when they are not feeding one appetite, for blood, they are feeding the other, having so much sex that it becomes repetitive and routine!  There are some books and movies in which vampirism is a secret that you're afraid to reveal, similar to being gay. And there are many other versions of vampires these days, most of them taking more after the forever horny and insatiable, rather than the resigned to treat drinking blood as a second-best substitute to sex.  In fact, I have read so many other vampire books, including the very funny Mary Janice Davison Unwed and Undead series, that I figured there wasn't much original to be said.

Imagine my shock and surprise when one of the voices in my head presented himself as a vampire, and told me he had to be the hero of the book I was having trouble writing! I kept most of the first chapter that I had already written, and deleted the second one.  Then I rewrote the end of the first chapter, the other voices began to speak up, and before I knew it the book, Prophecy of the Undead, was done!  I sent it out with crossed fingers, and immediately started writing the sequel, since I had left some issues unresolved.

Now El Día de Los Muertos is quickly approaching, and on November 1, my contemporary paranormal vampire romance, Prophecy of the Undead, will be published!  I only hope that my vampires can make their contribution to vampire lore.

But I ask you readers, what kind of vampires do you enjoy reading about?  Is the whole idea of immortality worth giving up food and sunlight, as well as mortal things like having children? Would it matter to you whether or not you would have to give up sex?  Would you say "yes", if given the choice?  Why or why not?

Excerpt
Here my vampire Yuri explains what he has done to Keisha:

They stared at each other for a while before he broke the silence.
"Aren't you going to ask me anything?  You are a scientist, so I thought you would be ready to investigate."
"Investigate what?  I figure I'm just dreaming, so what does it matter?"
He smiled, "Dreaming?  Are you sure?"
She nodded solemnly, "Dreaming...or dead.  Either way, there isn't much I can do about it at this point is there?"
He moved his elbows onto the armrests to tap his fingertips against each other, steepled on his chest.
"And what makes you think you are dead?"
     "I...uh...I can't find my pulse.  If I don't have a pulse, I'm dead."
"Do you want to check for mine?"
She shrunk back against the chair, "Why?" she asked in a small voice.
"I don't have much of one either.  It's part of the nature of the beast...or rather, of what I am...what we are, because you are like me now."
"What are you?  Us?  Am I dreaming? Is all of this a function of my neurons misfiring while my brain is dying?"
"What do you remember from yesterday?"
Keisha furrowed her brow.  "I remember being in the trunk of a car, tied up.  I remember the two voices of the men who were hired to kill me.  I remember the trunk being opened and a gun was jammed into me.  It was kind of dark, so I didn't see much, but I heard some weird sounds and some fighting.  Someone was trying to rescue me, I guess.  Then the gun fired and I took a bullet in my chest.  I think it pierced my heart, because the pain was unbearable, and breathing became problematic."
     The man nodded.  "Anything else?"
Keisha looked confused, "The rest was only dreaming, I think.  There was a man's voice..."
     "Mine."
"He offered me a choice in living or dying...then the next thing I knew we appeared to be having wild sex."  She felt herself blushing as the smile on his face grew wider.
"Was it good for you too?"
Keisha jumped out of the chair, "What the fuck is going on here?  You ask me to remember, then you expect me to believe you were a part of my dream?  Why do I get the feeling there's a lot you're not telling me?  Isn't it time for you to do some explaining?"
He nodded, but before he was able to speak, she pulled the robe tighter around herself and asked in a small voice, "I'm asking you again, am I dead?  How the hell was I able to fly up to the window in the bathroom?  Why don't I have a pulse?  What the hell is going on?"
The man nodded to indicate that she should sit down again.
"Stop that pacing, girl.  You are agitating yourself, which will make you hungry more quickly.  I'd rather have answered all of your questions to your satisfaction, before you need to eat."
She exploded, "I'm not hungry!"  But the minute she said it, a gnawing, empty feeling began to roil in her gut.
"You will be very soon.  I can see it on your face.  Now sit and listen while I talk."

There will be mated vampires, Hispanic and other Russian vampires, and a 5,000-year old Mayan vampire mummy who hates everyone.  The Mayan prediction of the end of time figures into the plot, along with Keisha's research into intelligence.  The book is available on November 1, and the 13th Baktun in the Mayan long-count calendar ends on December 21, 2012.  That should give you enough time to read what happens.

End of a Series... Or Is It?

It all started with a deadline and a question mark.

I've told people before that I never intended CHARMED LOVER to turn into the Caveat Emptor Series. I had a deadline approaching and dug through my list of started books to find a story I could finish with a minimum of fuss. CHARMED LOVER, at the time with no title, jumped out at me. It was half written and the plot lent to being a novella. A quick little piece about a vampire not being in control of the relationship as is the norm for Vampire Romance.

Everything was going great until I typed the last sentence -- a question. One simple question that I couldn't get past to save my life. I decided to take a chance. I held my breath and sent it off to my editor, hoping for the best. She replied asking if I planned to leave it hanging like that. And then I heard my muse laughing in the back of my mind.

My muse set me up. Seven books later, I see that now. When I replied to my editor, I told her of course I wasn't going to leave it hanging like that and I had other books planned. No, I didn't but my muse was working on fixing that. Within a day, I had an overall plot of three couples trying to make love work during the vampire-mage war and premises for the rest of the books. The Caveat Emptor Series was born.

Books 1 - 6 of the series all end with a question mark (ie - a cliffhanger), continuing the trend of the first story. They are written as couplets (two books per couple) meant to be read in order since one book flows naturally into the next.

Caveat Emptor means Buyer Beware. I named the series that because Ryver (the first heroine of the series) bought Theron and ended up getting WAY more than she bargained for in the process. Sicily (the second heroine in the series) had to use her body as payment for Lamon's protection, and Medusa (the final heroine in the series) had to decide if remembering her past was a fair price for continuing her future with Darius. Each heroine paid a price for a love that had no guarantees.

In this world, the humans are caught in an on-going conflict between the vampires and the mages. There are those who want to live together in peace and those who think fighting is much more profitable. Follow three couples as they struggle with love during this unstable time.

Special Note: For a limited time get CHARMED LOVER (the book that started it all) for a reduced price at Changeling Press.

And why the added "Or Is It?" in the title? Because my muse tossed a spin-off at me. A single story involving a menage couple that develops after the dust settles in ETERNAL LOVERS. I'm halfway finished with that novella. Once I do finish, that should be it for the Caveat Emptor series... I hope.

Fun stuff coming soon!

New projects are always fun to talk about, so I thought I'd tell you a bit about my next releases and the new collaboration I've started with fellow author Cindy Jacks! First up my next book is a vampire erotic with a dark twist, it's called HUNTERS' GAME and will be released with New Dawning International Book Fair, probably within the next month, though I don't have an actual date yet. This began as a short novella, and after some major editing and working with my fabulous editor there, it's turned into a 10K short that is intense and dramatic. I'm also lucky enough to again have a Kayden McLeod cover for my work. Kayden is brilliant as anyone who's seen her work knows, so having her as the artist is always a bonus!

I've signed a new contract with Ellora's Cave, the title is RECKLESS ASSIGNATION, and it's a Halloween themed thriller, with some pretty wild twists and some spooky turns... I had a lot of fun revising this one, which had a very limited run years back, and for this one is an entirely new story in most respects.

A tiny (UNedited) sneak peek is here:

Cinthya dismissed from her mind the monsters and ghouls of the previous night and concentrated on locating the room where she was supposed to find her mystery caller. A sag in the weathered wood of the floor creaked in the hollow corridor. She bit her bottom lip to prevent any sound from escaping. Her hammering heartbeat gradually subsided, and she felt some of the fear-induced dizziness pass. A chill rippled through her, though, when she realized she was staring up at the shadowy ceiling, her eyes drawn to the vast network of cobwebs that had been woven over the years. It looked like wisps of cotton, stretched to the point of breaking, except that this thready cloak was dulled with years of dust and grime.

A distinct thud at the other end of the long hallway had her heading in that direction without taking the time to consider her actions.

She was several doors away from the room she was supposed to be looking for when she was grabbed from behind. A firm hand over her mouth cut off her scream. There was no chance to fight off her attacker, and she cursed herself as she was dragged into a room and flung into a chair. She had a sense of movement, whoever had grabbed her was little more than a shadowy presence in the near-total darkness. Her hands were tied securely behind the high chair back, and her feet were bound to the legs of the seat…

My next EC project, the one with Cindy Jacks, is going to take you all to the exciting and sexy world of music and musicians. When Cindy and I first talked about working together on a "duet/antho" we had considered fallen angels as the common theme. I was working on something of that kind, and so was she. As schedules often do, ours went sort of nuts and we never got past the talking stage. Recently, I posted the opening to a new story–it was originally supposed to be a flash fiction, but once Michael Eden started talking, he had a lot more to say than I anticipated. Cindy checked him out and proposed our project. Keep an eye open for more as we get things in place. We’ve set our personal first draft deadline for September 1st, so it might not be too long to wait!

In the meantime, have a great day everyone!! Here’s hoping the week ahead is filled with fun and positive things for you all!!

Prophecy of the Undead

I'm so excited!  I just signed a contract for my next book to come out on November 1st, or as it's known in the Hispanic culture, El Dia de los Muertos.  How appropriate when the major characters in Prophecy of the Undead are vampires!  And one of them is Hispanic. The book also features a 5,000-year-old Mayan vampire and an impending alien re-visitation.
Along the way to finishing this book the hero took a drastic change.  The heroine was always going to be a black female neuro-biologist who is attempting to isolate and identify the hormone or enzyme in the human brain that is responsible for intelligence. I woke up from a dream over a year ago with  part of her story having "played" for me as I slept.  When I woke up I knew I had to write about her.  But who does she fall in love with?
Originally I was going to have her hero be a Native American doctor on a reservation in the north woods.  In fact I had already written the first two chapters when I had another dream.  In this one a tall Russian man with very white skin and platinum-blond hair "told" me that he was her hero.  When I objected he grinned at me, flashing his vampire teeth, and said I had no other choice.  I tried to explain to him that I don't want to write about vampire romance--it's too over-done.  What else new can there be to say?  He reminded me that the original story involved Mayans and their end-of-the-world prediction for 2012.  I woke up with a desire to research the Mayan culture.
Mayan queen using thorned rope to pierce tongue.

What I learned was just how saturated with blood their culture was.  Ancient Mayans believed humans had been put on earth to nourish the gods.  Their religion involved lot of ritual sacrifices and blood-letting.  One of the popular games ended with beheading the losing team.  Obsidian knives and ropes with obsidian thorns imbedded in them were used by the king and his royal court to publicly pierce their own most sensitive places, like the earlobes, tongue, penis or labia, to bleed onto strips of paper or cloth in containers, which would then be burned as an offering to the gods.  Why might their gods have demanded so much blood?  Well, if they were vampires...
The Mayan culture also featured unusually advanced aspects.  There were maps showing the stars, views that could only be seen from space.  They had mastered the concept of "zero" which even the Romans had not figured out yet. And there are all of those huge palaces and temples...were they all created by the sheer back-breaking labor of many slaves, or might they have had help?  Perhaps from aliens?

This is the blurb for Prophecy of the Undead:
Keisha is a neurobiology researcher determined to discover the secret to intelligence to save humanity from itself.  What she learns leads her to realize a bigger threat comes from beyond the stars.  Yuri is a Russian vampire whose long-dead feelings respond to the scientist whose brain he admires but whose curves he can't resist.  Will his love reach the places in her heart that she has ignored for so long?  And can they defeat the prophecy of the undead to find happiness sharing eternity?

THE CRYSTAL ALTAR by Adele Dubois

An original steamy short.
New Release! GIRLS WHO BITE lesbian vampire erotica anthology from Cleis Press. Edited by Delilah Devlin.

 ©Adele Dubois 2011

Excerpt:

“Only your cousin would celebrate her birthday in a creepy place like this cave.” Rosa scrunched up her nose.

Morgan tried not to smile, since Rosa was being serious. If she only knew how cute she looked when she made that face, she might never do it again.

Rosa hated the dark and anything remotely otherworldly. She refused to watch fantasy or horror movies and detested Halloween. Rosa liked musicals, TV cooking shows, and Christmas.

She’d come to Angela’s birthday party strictly under protest. Morgan had mollified her with a picnic she had prepared. Rosa worked as the chef at the restaurant Morgan managed and rarely got a break from food preparation.

It seemed the novelty had worn off.

“The caves are historic.” Morgan tried reasoning. “Natural wonders. People travel from all over the world to visit and they’re right in our backyard. We’ll see formations like calcite crystal walls, flowstones, and dripstones millennia old.”

Rosa stopped folding the blanket and set her mouth in a grim line. Her nostrils flared. “I’d rather wait in the car. You go. She’s your cousin. And a freak, if you ask me.”

Morgan couldn’t argue there. Her cousin Angela had turned a whole new kind of weird since her trip to Europe. She’d left eastern Pennsylvania a skinny geek in glasses that nobody wanted to hang with. She’d returned a curvy Goth with facial piercings, night vision, and an entourage of beautiful women who’d moved into the Lancaster home she shared with her father.

Angela had explained that laser eye surgery in Eastern Europe was light years ahead of procedures in the United States. Her new look was the work of some chick she’d met on the road named Lillith. The transformation, she claimed, had made her popular. Angela seemed perfectly happy.

Which was more than Morgan could say at the moment.

“I know she’s odd, but she’s family and it’s her birthday. What else could I do?” Morgan took the blanket from Rosa’s hands and laid it on the grass beneath the cover of an old weeping willow. Rosa followed inside the natural umbrella of leaves and slender branches.

“Let’s not argue, okay?” Morgan pleaded. “We have at least an hour before the others arrive. We haven’t been alone all day.” She hoped her voice sounded husky and sexy and not as desperate as she felt.

Secretly, she worried they were headed for bed death. Rosa had become more distant and less interested in sex than she had during their first six months together. Morgan had plenty of platonic friendships and the last thing she wanted was for Rosa to drift into that category. She loved her and wanted her as much now as she had in the beginning.

Morgan lay down on her back and reached up from the blanket for Rosa. “Come here.”
