A Bit of Irish in Me

Tomorrow is St. Patrick's Day and I wanted to share with you a bit about the Irish.

In 2008 the census reported that 11.9% of all Americans claimed Irish ancestory in this country. That's a large percentage. The Irish are famous for their fighting spirit, and their drinking abilities. But what I want to draw attention to here is the culture they brought to our country and the many good things that come from being just a bit Irish.

So enjoy these Irish blessings, sayins, and toasts, as they are heartwarming.

Blessings to enjoy from the Irish:

May love and laughter light your days,

and warm your heart and home.

May good and faithful friends be yours,

wherever you may roam.

May peace and plenty bless your world

with joy that long endures.

May all life's passing seasons

bring the best to you and yours!

And more

May the road rise to meet you,

May the wind be always at your back,

May the sun shine warm upon your face,

The rains fall soft upon your fields and,

Until we meet again,

May God hold you in the palm of His hand.

And more

May you always walk in sunshine.

May you never want for more.

May Irish angels rest their wings right beside your door

Irish Proverb

* If you do not sow in the spring you will not reap in the autumn.

* It is not a secret if it is known by three people.

* A friend's eye is a good mirror.

Irish Toasts

I have known many, liked not a few, loved only one, I drink to you.

May you live as long as you want, and never want as long as you live.

May the grass grow long on the road to hell for want of use.

May you live to be a hundred years, with one extra year to repent.

As you slide down the banisters of life may the splinters never point the wrong way.

Now for an Irish coffee recipe:

17 ounces of coffee

1 ounce of whiskey

Brown sugar to taste (at least a tablespoon)

Heavy cream (whipped, add a teaspoon of white sugar for extra sweetness)

Chocolate (your choice of any chocolate crumpled in the cup)

Brew coffee as desired, whip the cream so it doesn't run off the spoon

Heat your cup with hot steamy water

Add sugar to your cup, about a tablespoon of brown sugar will do

Stir in the whiskey

Stir to combine all ingredients

You can add a favorite chocolate, like Andes or toffee crumpled into coffee

Top with a heavy cream whipped to perfection.

Sit back, read the blessings and enjoy the Irish legacies that have been left to us.

Some Irish baby names for Girls:

Ciara-means (dark, usually dark hair and eyes)

Shannon-after one of the most famous and honored rivers of Ireland

Teagan-means-beautiful

Shauna-the female version of Sean

Boy names for the Irish babe:

Aedan- means born of fire

Cahal-great warrior

Lorcan-mighty warrior-fierce

Malachi-angel messenger of God

Quaint customs

The 6th of January is "girls night out".

December 26th is celebrated as "Wren Day" with parades and music and lively folkware.

A tad of history:

In the mid 1500's Grace O'Malley inherited her father's ship and became known as one of the most notorious pirates of her day with 200 crew members she looted other ships off the coast of West Ireland. Arrested by the British, she obtained a full pardon on the promise to help guard against the Spanish Armada.

And I'll leave you with this last one:

May your glass be ever full.

May the roof over your head be always strong.

And may you be in heaven half an hour before the devil knows you're dead.
