What kind of series do you prefer?

Although I'm addicted to TV series (think Grey's Anatomy, House, Suits, etc.), I haven't read many books that are a part of a series. The exception would be murder mysteries where the heroine/hero solve new crimes in each offering. Somehow, that genre just lends itself to a continuing flow of stories with the same characters.

What I'm talking about here are series with different heroines/heroes in each book (not necessarily sequels) with a unifying theme. The books can be stand alones, but they are also interconnected.

Take my Outlawed Realm series for example.

Unending Desire, Book One, introduces us to Nikoli Zorr and Regina Page, both inhabitants of earth but from different dimensions on it. The erotic romance is part sci-fi, part paranormal, totally hot. :)

In Illicit Desire, Book Two, Lukan and Arez, pleasure slaves from E4 (the fourth dimension on Earth) are introduced. Nikoli and Regina are also in the book, they're integral to the plot, but they aren't its hero/heroine any longer. They're secondary characters. Lukan and Arez are in the spotlight.

Book Three, which my editor has just accepted, introduces a new heroine/hero. The other characters (Regina, Nikoli, etc.) are still a part of the ongoing story, but again, they aren't the stars.

My second series, Appointment with Pleasure, began with the erotic contemporary romance Claiming Magique. The story of Hunt and Alexa, a call girl like no other. She calls herself Magique.

These two are still a part of Book Two, which I'm working on now. However, they're no longer the stars, but secondary characters.

My third series, The Prophecy, begins with Come Fill Me which will be pubbed this December. An erotic paranormal, this is a story about a man and woman with otherworldly powers engaged in a life-and-death struggle with each other's clans in the American southwest. The tagline reads - Two men will stop at nothing to have her gift, her desire...and her love. Yes, parts of it are a menage. However, unlike my other two series this one focuses on the original hero/heroine throughout the other books.

So, which kind of series do you like best or do you even have a preference between those that have new stars or those with the same characters in different plots? Do you begin to tire of those well-known heros/heroines after awhile, no matter how exciting the story may be? Or do you miss beloved favorites when new heroines/heros come along and take their place?
