Never Say Never

Please welcome our guest blogger today, Anitra McLeod.
Anita McLeod’s Blog
Never say never

I honestly never thought this novel would see the light of day.  If the title sounds familiar to you, you’ve probably seen it in the RWA contest listings or even judged part of the manuscript in an RWA sponsored contest. Overlord finaled multiple times and was repeatedly requested by editors, but something always went wrong, usually at the last minute.  It was heartbreaking to stand so close to success only to watch that potential disappear because an editor left or a line folded. But there is an upside in that when my series finally found a home, it also found an editor who honestly loves my work and has helped me to grow as a writer. So, never say never because you never know.  J
His planet is his prison…and only she can set him free.
After a year, Michael "Overlord" Parker finally knows who's been pilfering his black market goods. Astonishingly, the elusive Bandit of Taiga isn't a man. It's a woman, an infuriating spitfire who's half in love with Michael's overly romanticized reputation.
Remarkably Average Mary exudes an intoxicating scent that Michael can't quite puzzle out, even with his unique ability. As long as she remains bound and blindfolded, he has the advantage—and the bonus of tormenting the bane of his existence.
Mary's deceptively innocent face has never failed her. Yet somehow she's at the mercy of a man she knows only as "Commander". His demands are simple. Surrender her methods of banditry, or surrender her body. As his essence invades her intuitive ability—and her remaining senses—she becomes increasingly frantic to escape before she yields all that and more to her compelling captor.
Their sensual sparring ignites, and Michael finds himself wanting to erase Overlord's myth from her fantasies in favor of the real man. But first he has to foil the slippery little devil's escape attempts. And find out who's been using her to unknowingly help the empire wipe him off the face of his own planet.
Warning: This futuristic medieval contains a planet-owning alpha hero, a feisty heroine who can swear in over thirty languages, a side-kick with a crackleseed addiction, witty repartee, epic space battles, sensual karate, and tight black leather pants.

Excerpt
Commander stood and pulled her with him.
“Even at your very best, you could not fight me off if I were of a mind to have you, active bracelet or not.”
“You wouldn’t.” She looked up into his determined face.
“You know this for a fact because…” His wicked gaze held her captive even more than his hands on her arms.
“Because…” She trailed off when nothing came to mind. She couldn’t think of one reason to prevent him from doing whatever he pleased and, damn it all to hell, but the idea of being at his mercy excited her. Desperate to find a valid excuse, she remembered his promise not to steal from her. “You wouldn’t take me against my will since it’s a lot more of a power trip for you if I give in.”
His eyes lit up as if a flash grenade had gone off in his skull.
Bingo!
“And you say I’m transparent.” She laughed in his face until he pressed her against the wall of flexiglass with three long, pressing strides. Birds squawked away from the edge.
“A whole day without food, locked in your bathroom like a trembling coward, you emerge ready and willing to fight once again.” It sounded like a question, but the answer simmered in his knowing eyes.
She lowered her gaze. “I don’t want to fight with you.”
“I don’t want to fight with you, either.” He tilted her face up and held his mouth so close she could taste his breath.
Melting into his embrace, she longed to lift her lips the fraction he demanded for contact but vowed not to move. Even if desire killed her, she’d keep her lips to herself.

Twenty Questions with Author Paris Brandon!!!

Please give us your website addy, a list of your books and a short bio.

I’ve worn many hats in my lifetime. I’ve been a bookkeeper, bank teller, librarian and lamb wrangler—okay, that’s a made up term but I lived in a small rural community for years and ended up basically running a rescue operation for animals that didn’t have a place in the food chain or anyone else’s life. These days my husband and I live in a larger town and the only thing I’m wrangling are words. My decision to try my hand at writing erotic romance paid off when Ellora’s Cave published my first novella, an older woman/younger man story, “No Holds Barred”. I sold a short story, “IOU” that was part of the Carnal Reunions anthology to Resplendence followed by more sales to EC with my paranormal/shifter novel “Assassin’s Kiss” and a contemporary novella, a 2011 Passionate Plume Finalist, “Head Over Heels” (Book One—Red Stilettos) and my latest romantic suspense novella, “Cross My Heart”. Readers can find me at http://parisbrandon.com.

How do you usually come up with a story idea? Dreams? Writer’s journal? Eavesdropping on conversations? Newspaper?

My ideas literally come from all of the above. I never know what’s going to spark that “what if” question that eventually leads to a story.

What is your process from idea to first draft?

I usually journal when an idea sparks the “what if” question until I have the bare bones of a story and the characters evolve because “what if” invariably evokes the kind of hero and heroine I need to tell the story. Kira, the heroine of “Assassin’s Kiss” literally took form when I asked myself the question: “What could happen if someone didn’t know they were a shifter until their first shift?” Sebastian, the hero was born when I asked: “What’s the worst situation you could throw the heroine into?” Incidentally, he was an Assassin who was sworn by oath to terminate half-human shifters. Did I mention that Kira is half-human? After that comes the working synopsis that evolves throughout the first draft and I start a file for scene ideas that I think I’ll need.

Who or what inspires you when your creative mojo is lagging?

When my mojo is lagging I know that I need to take a break and I’ve learned that lunch with friends is one of the most positive activities to get my creativity flowing again. If that isn’t possible I’ll watch a movie(s) and just relax. Of course movie-watching involves large amounts of chocolate, popcorn and anything else that appeals to me!

Who is your Yoda—your seasoned mentor?

That would have to be my long-time friend and critique buddy, author Lynn Michaels.

What importance do you place on writing workshops? What workshops would you recommend to us?

The minute you think you know everything about this business I think you’re in serious trouble. I try to do at least one craft and one career/business workshop per year. I belong to RWA and they offer many online courses on anything from beginning craft to building a website. They literally have something for every stage of your career. I don’t attend as many conferences these days and I find the online RWA community very helpful.

What person would you like to thank for inspiring you in your writing aspirations? How did this person help you?

My husband. Years ago he found out how much I enjoyed writing and brought me home a typewriter (remember those) and told me to go for it. Kids, EDJ and life interrupted the flow but I found a local chapter of RWA several years ago and have been seriously writing since.

Have you ever used songs for inspiration?

Oh yes! I find music very inspiring. I wrote “Assassin’s Kiss” to “The Last of the Mohicans” soundtrack and used Enrique Iglesias’, “Hero” for my romantic suspense, “Cross My Heart”.

Do you play music when you write? If so, what kind? Or, do you have to have silence or background noise to set your writing muse free?

I like music but “Hero” is the only song with lyrics that I’ve ever been able to write to. I actually prefer instrumentals and the theme depends upon what I’m writing.

Do you read in a different genre than you write? If yes, why? If you read in the same genre that you write, do you feel that it influences your writing in any way?

I tend to stay away from reading the same genre that I’m writing and if something sounds the least bit familiar, I edit it out.

Have you ever given assistance to a struggling new writer? Has another writer ever come to your aide? How?

I believe in paying it forward. I have been helped at all stages of my writing career, sometimes by people who didn’t really know me but were willing to help by answering my questions. I have an open-door policy when it comes to giving assistance to new writers and can always be contacted through my website. If I don’t know the answer to their question, I’ll try and point them in the right direction to find the answers they need.

What do you consider your greatest accomplishments in your career so far?

That’s a good question. I haven’t won any major awards and I’m hardly a household name but I’d have to say my first sale. For years, I literally edited my voice out of my work in an attempt to make it perfect. I wrote “No Holds Barred” from idea to final draft in two months and then sent it off without anymore edits. It was nerve wracking but it taught me a valuable lesson.

If you won the big lottery, what would you do with the money? Would give any of it to charity? If so, which one?

Believe it or not my husband and I have discussed this very thing. We tend to do things anonymously but family would come first and then homeless shelters and food banks.

What is the best advice you want to give to a new writer?

Never give up and trust yourself enough to believe in your voice!

If you could choose an animal for a mascot, what animal would it be? What do you admire about this animal? Do you feel you have qualities similar to this animal? If so, what are they?

Have you seen the online video of the baby rhino that was abandoned by his mother? He is the cutest most cuddly thing I’ve ever seen but I know he’s going to grow up and have a pretty tough hide and a nose he isn’t afraid of sticking anywhere—uhm, it sounds a little bit like me.

If money, education and fear factors were set aside, what three careers would you like to attempt other than writing?

Something in the entertainment field. I’d love to study acting and perform onstage—Shakespeare. I’d love to sing professionally (trust me, you don’t want to hear me, professionally or otherwise) but I also think I’d be perfectly happy doing something creative in the art world. I have a friend who is a master weaver and I could see myself designing and weaving projects.

If money, talent and fear were no object, what big adventure would you like to have?

Seriously, I would like to travel the world and just learn about other cultures. I’d like to be able to fit everything I’d need into a duffel bag and go. Right now.

What characteristics do you like to instill in your heroes? What characteristics do you feel are necessary for a good heroine?

Both my hero and heroine, no matter what their agendas have their own code of honor that they won’t deviate from—until it becomes necessary to compromise for one another, of course. Seriously, honor is more important in my characters than flowing locks, piercing eyes or huge biceps—although, I’m not going to throw rocks at the characteristics that may attract me.

If you had the power to change two things in the world, what would those two things be?

Number one would be to balance the financial disparity between the rich and the poor. Number Two would be over-turning the ruling that allowed one person/organization to control the media. Come to think of it, achieving number two might pave the way to achieving number one.

If you could have a super power for a day, what would it be? Why?

On a lighter note because that last one did get a bit serious, I think I’d like to know what the next big “thing” in publishing was going to be. Trust me, I’d share.

Head Over Heels –2011 Passionate Plume Finalist

Blurb:

Height-challenged Bella Jacienski literally falls head over magic red stilettos into sexy philanthropist’s Rhys Vincent’s arms and wonders if the legend attached to the shoes is true. Has she found her heart’s desire, a passionate, lust-crazed lover who wants only her¬—always?

Excerpt:

"I love your fingers inside me but I want more. I need to know two things,” she whispered, as her muscles gathered and her blood pooled, low and heavy. “Do you have a condom and did you lock the door?”

“Yes and yes,” he growled as he slid his fingers out of her and stood, still clasping her in his arms. He kissed her all the way into the adjoining bathroom and sat her on the counter before he turned and locked the door.

“Two and a half minutes,” he said, unzipping his pants. He pushed them down and she moaned when his erection sprang free. Thick and roped with heavy veins, it was crowned with a knob of velvety flesh that made her mouth water. The sight of his big hands wrapped around his cock as he positioned the condom made her pussy throb and when he rolled it down, smoothing his hands over the rigid column of warm, hard flesh, moisture seeped from her pussy. The tension in the tiny room was palpable, exciting her even more.

She hiked up her dress until it was around her waist and then his fingers were twisting into her lace panties, pulling them over her hips and thighs. He balanced her legs across his forearms.

“My boots…”

“Leave them on.” He groaned and leaned into her, pressing her back on the counter. “This isn’t how I wanted our first time to be.”

“It’s perfect.” She moaned as he plunged inside her without any semblance of finesse. It was raw and primitive and sex had never been so exciting. “Fuck me,” she whispered and sent him into a frenzy of desperate strokes, each one pulling a moan from her.

He fucked like he kissed, with his eyes open, his penetrating gaze spearing her with his frantic, soulful intent, twisting into her as she writhed, chasing after the perfect fevered thrust. They were all perfect. The sudden electrifying jolt of her orgasm seized her and she gave up all control and let it take her. She moaned but his mouth was there and he swallowed her cry as he followed her down, coming in a series of bucks and jerks.

Panting, she sprawled under him and marveled that at last his eyes were closed. “I think we may have broken the sandwich man’s record.”

Where Do I Get Story Ideas by Paige Tyler

When people ask me where I get ideas for my books, I tell them anywhere and everywhere, which is true. Sometimes, I'll read an article in a newspaper or magazine and it will give me an idea. Other times, someone will say something that will make me think, hey that'd be a great idea for a book. That's how I came up with the story for GOOD COP, BAD GIRL. One of the women who works in my hubby's office is a huge fan of the television show "Cops" and she was telling him about an episode in which a cop pulled over a pair of girls for speeding and they thought the whole thing was a prank because the guy was just way too good looking to be a cop.

When my hubby told me about it, I immediately had one of those hey-that'd-be-a-great-idea-for-a-book moments! Having the hero pull the heroine over for a traffic stop wasn't going to work in the book, though, so I decided to have him show up at her apartment because the party she's having for her birthday is getting a little too loud and disturbing the neighbors. And instead of thinking it's some kind of prank, she assumes the hot cop is a male stripper her friends hired for her birthday. Hmm, a hot guy in uniform that comes with his own handcuffs. You probably think you know exactly where this is going, don't you?

While I won't tell you exactly what happens between the hero and heroine, I will share the blurb and give you the link to a sexy excerpt. Hope you enjoy it! And if you decide to pick up GOOD COP, BAD GIRL let me know how you like it!

GOOD COP, BAD GIRL
Gotta love a guy who comes with his own handcuffs!

When a hunky cop shows up at Julie Hanson’s apartment to tell her the police received a complaint about the noise from her birthday party, she assumes he’s a male stripper her girlfriends hired. Upon discovering the gorgeous Kirk Chandler really is a police officer, she’s completely mortified, especially since she teased him about giving her a birthday spanking.

Kirk appears at her door for a second time later that night, bearing gifts and asking if she got her birthday spanking. Julie not only gets her bottom nicely warmed, but is treated to a night of pleasure that qualifies as the best birthday present any girl could ask for.

Now for a little behind-the-scenes peek at how I came up with my paranormal erotic romance from Ellora's Cave called DEAD SEXY.

First, to set the stage, I need to share a little something with you about myself. Well, about my hubby and me, actually. We love zombie movies, from the George Romero gems to Shaun of the Dead and everything in between, including "Walking Dead," the new series on AMC. You just can't go wrong with a movie full of walking dead people, can you? Well, if you've ever seen a zombie movie (or even you haven't), then you know the creatures aren't the heroes of the film. I mean, how can they be, right? They're all dead and decayed and downright unattractive, not to mention pretty damn scary. Which was why you can imagine my surprise when my hubby suggested I write an erotic romance about a zombie hero. I was like, you're kidding, right? What woman in her right mind would fall in love with a dead guy? No way could that possibly work, or so I thought. Turns out, my hubby wasn't kidding. In fact, he started working up ideas for the story.

"The hero didn't have to be a zombie all the time," he told me. "Think outside the box - take a little literary license!"

Okay, I thought. I suppose I could be open-minded.

My hubby told me that in his out-of-the-box world, the hunky hero got cursed by an evil Voodoo priestess and only turns into a zombie sometimes.

"I'm listening," I said.

"And when he does go zombie, he doesn't have to be like the kind in the movies," my hubby added. "Well, he has to look like one, you know all dead and stuff, but he doesn't have to be a mindless creature or attack humans or eat anything gross."

So, brains are completely out, thanks goodness!

"Think Jensen Ackles or Jared Padelecki, with a really, really, really dark tan - (yes, my hubby knows I've got a thing for the Supernatural hunks!) - well, maybe more gray and black than tan, but you get the idea."

I thought about that for a minute. "So, the hero's dead, but he's still sexy, is that what you're saying?"

"Exactly," he said, giving me a grin as my eyes lit up with understanding.

By that point, my hubby had pretty much sold me on the idea.

Now that I've revealed the story behind the story, I thought I'd share the blurb and give you the link to a smokin’ hot excerpt just to whet your appetite for more!

Blurb:

Romance author Simone Kent thinks she might just have found the most perfect guy in all of New York City - in bed and out. But Drake Parrish is about as far from perfect as any man can get. Eight years ago, he was cursed by an evil Voodoo priestess to live part of his life as a zombie. Since then, he has lived like a recluse on New York’s Upper East Side, afraid to go out for fear he’ll suddenly turn into one of the walking dead.

The sex is the hottest either of them has ever experienced and Simone discovers just how naughty she can be with Drake, while he finds himself feeling things for her that he hasn’t felt in a very long time. When the Voodoo priestess learns of their relationship, however, she comes after him again. She is determined to make sure he won’t have a future with Simone, even if that means killing both him and the woman he loves.

And to finish, I’ll give you the story-behind-the-story of my paranormal romance GHOST HUNTER.

When I heard my local RWA chapter set up a lecture with a team of paranormal investigators, it got me thinking right away about writing a book about a ghost hunter. Because the chapter is far from where we live, though, we didn't actually go to the lecture. I was a little bummed about that, especially since they were giving out EMF detectors. On second thought, maybe it was better we didn't go. Ghosts freak me out, so having something that can detect them probably wouldn't be a good idea.

Enough about me, back to the story-behind-the-story. While I knew the hero was a ghost hunter named Trace, I wasn't quite sure how the heroine fit into the story, or even who she was. So, my hubby and I played around with a few ideas at our local PF Chang's (we come up with a lot of story ideas there!) We both decided that having the heroine Cassidy need the hero's help because her house was haunted or something like that didn't seem original enough, so we made her a budding romance writer who tags along with the hero and his team to do some research. Like any good story, though, it had to have some conflict, which is why Trace and Cassidy completely rub each other the wrong way right from the beginning. Actually, he thinks he's a jerk. But don't worry, Cassidy discovers underneath that rough ghost hunter exterior, Trace is just the man she's been looking for.

Okay, so we had our hero and heroine. Now we needed a bad guy. That's where the ghost comes in. He's not your standard, everyday ghost, though. He's a serial killer who attacked Cassidy that comes back from the grave to continue his string of grisly murders, and she's at the top of his list. To make things even more interesting, not only can he do all the regular ghostly stuff like walk through walls and materialize out of thin air, he can also take solid form.

I'm not going to tell you any more than that, though. Don't want to give too much away, you know. I will add that my editor at Ellora's Cave told me she got so caught up in the story, she completely forgot she was reading a submission!

Now that you know the story behind the story, I think I'll tease you with an excerpt. Enjoy!

BLURB:

Almost getting murdered by a serial killer gives Cassidy Kincaide a new lease on life and convinces her to go ahead and tackle that ghost-hunter novel she's always wanted to write. So, she hooks up with a gorgeous paranormal investigator named Trace McCord to do some research.

Cassidy and Trace rub each other the wrong way right from the beginning, but they have to put aside their differences when the serial killer who attacked her comes back from the grave to continue his string of grisly murders, with her at the top of his list.

Trace has to keep Cassidy close to keep her safe, and as they try to stay one step ahead of the ghost while figuring out how to stop it, he and Cassidy end up in each other’s arms. While Trace has a whole list of reasons why he shouldn’t get involved with her, he finds himself falling in love with the beautiful blonde anyway. And even though Cassidy started out thinking he was a jerk, she learns that underneath the rough ghost hunter exterior, he’s just the man she’s always been looking for. Now, all they have to do, is live long enough to be together.

On Being A Nana by Rie McGaha

On Being A Nana by Rie McGaha

My granddaughter, Meagan is eighteen months old. We live in the same house, so I am watching her grow up on a day-to-day basis. She is larger than other children her age. At three feet tall and thirty-four pounds, she's the size of the average three year old. There is nothing unusual in this once you know her mother is 6' 2" and normally weighs around one hundred and ninety pounds. Meagan's daddy is 6' 7" tall and weighs in right around two hundred and eighty pounds. Meagan is also a little genius, and I don't mean that in the way grandparents think their grandchildren are all so smart, cute and funny. While I do think that about all 34 of my grandchildren (#'s 35 & 36 will be here later this year), Meagan is literally a genius with an IQ way above her age group.

At eighteen months, she knows colors, numbers, shapes, and sings songs like Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star. She already pretends, and invents her own games. Also very adept at figuring things out on her own, like how to open the baby gates, get to stuff on high shelves, and she watches the things the adults in her life do. She knows how the quad works and thankfully, she is not yet strong enough to pull the starter cable. Her daddy allows her to operate the throttle and she likes to go fast. She is also allowed to drive our trucks while sitting in our laps. (Now before I hear any complaints, we live in the country, one-lane roads, and we have over 400 acres with no neighbors or traffic. The mail Jeep going by is our traffic.)

As I sit and watch her going about her little baby games, I am constantly amazed at how her little mind works. She is also talking very well for her age, and not just saying words. She says full sentences and is very observant. One day while I was in the bathroom, Meagan walks in and looks around, went to the shower, looked up at the faucet, then turned to me, and said, "The water's off." And went on her way. The TV in the living room and in Meagan's room is tuned to Nick Jr. all day long. At first, I thought it would be too much TV for her, but she only really watches certain things. The Backyardigans, Dora The Explorer, and Go! Diego, Go! are among her favorite shows, and the Fresh Beat Band gets her full attention.

Meagan is also a brute and fearless. Nothing scares her, and when one of the adults trip, she rolls with laughter. When we hide behind a door and jump out when she walks by, it cracks her up. Being chased results in peals of laughter, and any time she can bop one of us with a toy, she's in baby heaven.

The dynamics between my grandchildren and I are so different than they were with my children at that age. I love having all the fun with little of the responsibility. Sure, I cook for her, bathe her, and watch over her, but I am also much more lenient as a Nana than as a mom. I love being able to give my grandchildren the things I couldn't give my children, simply because I didn't have the resources then as I do now. I also allow my granddaughter to do what she wants. She drinks coffee with breakfast, shaves her legs, uses deodorant, the blow dryer, and loves having her nails painted.

Being a Nana is a very cool job that I've had since I was thirty-four. Yes, far too young to become a grandmother, which is exactly what I told my daughter when my oldest grandchild, Mathew was born. I told her if he ever called me "Grandma," I would smack her. Now Mathew is eighteen and graduates from high school in June, and being a Nana has been the best job I've ever had, and one I recommend to everyone.

Calen by Rie McGaha Excerpt
The fire rose in the dark, casting its light in a wide circle. The woman stood with her hands raised over her head, her back arched and her face tilted toward the moonless sky. Only a backdrop of black velvet covered in stars glittering like diamonds lay overhead. She chanted in a language strange to his ears while her body swayed rhythmically. Blue, red and yellow sparks shot from the fire. The wind gusted and blew her long hair back, while her sheer gown billowed around her. He was mesmerized, enchanted, aroused. He remained in the shadows, wanting her, but not wanting to intrude. Suddenly, all went still, and she looked directly at him. Though he remained hidden, he sensed she knew he was there. She began walking toward him, but stayed  within the circle of light cast by the fire.
"Come," she whispered.
He stood frozen in place.
"Come to me," she whispered again.
He remained where he was.
"When you are ready to know, come to me."

Calen bolted upright, ready for action, but nothing stirred. A dream, he thought, his eyes growing accustomed to the darkness.

Lesbian Romance: Why Are People So Fascinated By Girl On Girl Action?

Please welcome our guest blogger Berengaria Brown is multipublished author.
Lesbian Romance: Why are People So Fascinated By Girl On Girl action?
As soon as there’s an item in the news about two female celebrities kissing, men swarm to the site, attracted by it. Women have always kissed each other in public. Yeah, sure, mostly its air kisses, but the concept is older than time. So what’s the attraction? Why all the hype?
Are men worried about the whole idea of women satisfying each other romantically, and men finding themselves no longer needed? Or do they lust after seeing twice as many breasts, twice as much female flesh to taste and touch?
More recently women are openly finding and reading lesbian fiction. Is it something they’ve always enjoyed, but previously hidden? Or is it something new, that fulfils a need they weren’t previously aware of having?
There’s something exciting about a kick-ass heroine who can save herself from danger finding romance for herself too. Finding her perfect match in maybe another kick-ass type, or possibly in someone softer, sweeter, gentler. Either way, the sex is sure to be explosive. After all, no one knows what turns a woman on, like another woman does. Likely because it turns her on too.
My fourth lesbian erotic romance novella has just been released. If you’ve never yet tried lesbian erotica be daring, give it a try!

"Paige's Passion" blurb
Paige is sent on a business trip and invites her good friend Madeline to go with her. They’ve been lusting after each other for some time but Paige was worried that taking the step to a sexual relationship might destroy their friendship. At the end of the second night they are committed to an ongoing relationship together.
But when they get back to their ordinary lives Paige is consumed by her job. Paige desperately wants the relationship to work, but her career is very important to her and Maddie is so easy-going. Can they ever be happy together?

STORY Excerpt WARNING Lesbian Romance
At forty, Madeline's hair was still a shiny chestnut with no signs of gray, her hazel eyes were always alive with fun, and she flitted from job to job as the mood took her. Paige, ten years younger, considered her short, dark brown hair and brown eyes positively dull beside the vivacious Maddy.
Paige grunted some affirmative noises, but her eyes and her mind were on that huge bed. She sat on the side of it and sank deeply into a cushy mattress and puffy quilt.
I'll finally be sharing a bed with Maddy. It's what I've wanted to do for so long. She turns me on so much more than any man ever has. And I know she's bisexual, she makes no secret of that. But does she desire me in that way? And if we fuck, will that ruin our friendship? We get on so well together. Will taking our relationship to a sexual level destroy our ability to have fun together? Gods, I wish I knew what to do here!
"Hey, wake up! Let's go try out the pool and hot tub on the roof," suggested Maddy, bouncing back into the room.
"Good plan. You change in the bathroom and I'll change here. But you have to put your clothes and shoes back on; they don't let you in the hallways just in swimwear."
"Not a problem," responded Maddy, grabbing her tote bag and heading back into the bathroom.
Paige changed into her plain navy one-piece and hastily dropped an equally plain navy A-line skirt over it. She was buttoning up a pale blue shirt when Maddy called out, "Okay to enter?"
"Yeah, sure," Paige replied, moving over to her luggage to grab her flip-flops.
Paige's heart began to beat so hard it almost drummed its way out of her chest as she looked at Maddy. Her friend was wearing a bright candy pink and orange tankini that should have clashed horribly with her hair, yet somehow looked stunning. Maddy's lush breasts stretched the top enticingly, her hips rounded out the bottom, and her belly protruded just the slightest bit, making a smooth-flowing curve across the garment that was very enjoyable to look at. Her legs were long and straight and slightly muscled, yet very feminine.
Maddy dropped a pink sundress over her head, slid her feet into matching pink sandals, and asked, "Are there pool towels, or do we need to take towels with us?"
"When I went up to look at it before you arrived, there was a stack of pool towels on a table by the door."
"Excellent. Let's go."
Paige grabbed her keycard and followed Maddy to the door, trying not to drool at her friend's yummy ass swaying beneath the sundress. It was even worse as they got off the elevator and walked up the few steps to the pool entry. Maddy's calf muscles flexed and stretched. Her ass swung slightly and Paige's cunt clenched with desire. She's my friend. Just a friend. Someone to hang out with and talk to. Not a lover, she told herself sternly.

Sarah McNeal Interviews Self

This is a first for me, interviewing myself.
Sarah’s Interview Questions

Please give us your website addy, a list of your books and a short bio.
Sarah is a published writer of contemporary, fantasy, paranormal and time         travel/historical       romances. She is currently writing a series of musical           instrument stories inspired          by her love of music and paranormal/fantasy books in the Legends of Valmora series. You can find Sarah's novels at Amira           Press and Victory Tales      Press/Western Trail Blazer line.

How do you usually come up with a story idea?  Dreams?  Writer’s         journal?Eavesdropping on conversations?  Newpaper?
All of these things but I especially like to write in a writer’s journal tidbits of      conversations, things that happen in my environment that are unusual or       interesting and people I meet.
What is your process from idea to first draft?
I usually think of a theme or a tagline then develop the blurb.  From there I write the synopsis and character sketches.  I cut out pictures from magazines that fit my characters (Jonny Depp and Hugh Jackman are frequent visitors)  and include story elements (motorcycles, castles, letters, etc) and scenery (woods, lakes, city streets, etc).   Then I tack them to the bulletin board above my desk.  I actually enjoy this part of the process.  Next, I write the story.
Who or what inspires you when your creative mojo is lagging?
Usually other authors help me when I get into uninspired periods.  Sometimes I just need to take a break from writing and read for a while or sit out on my deck and count the stars.
Who is your Yoda—your seasoned mentor?
I don’t have a specific Yoda but I do rely on the advice of my experienced writer friends.
What importance do you place on writing workshops?  What workshops would you recommend to us?
I have taken many writing classes both online and in physical classrooms.  Among my favorites were writing blurbs, creating query letters and one on procrastination and writer’s block.  I really think writing workshops are especially important in the beginning of a writer’s career.  RWA and its local chapters offer a variety of helpful workshops even for those who are not RWA members.
What person would you like to thank for inspiring you in your writing aspirations?   How did this person help you?
The first person to inspire me and believed in me was my high school English    teacher, Thomas Freeman and, later, Robert Williams, my college professor.
Jodie Belle, a friend and fellow author encouraged me in the early years of my   published life to reach higher.
Have you ever used songs for inspiration?
I haven’t used the words to songs but, now that I think of it, that’s a good idea.  Mostly I’ve used music to set the mood to write a scene.
Do you play music when you write?  If so, what kind?  Or, do you have to have silence or background noise to set your writing muse free?
I often use music to set the mood and tempo of a scene I’m working on.  Many times, I use TV as background noise while I’m writing or NPR radio.
Do you read in a different genre than you write?  If yes, why?  If you read in the same genre that you write, do you feel that it influences your writing in any way?
I don’t read paranormal stories while I’m writing one because I don’t want another author’s world-building or paranormal elements to influence my work.
I love reading time travel stories and, even if I read them while I’m working on a time travel, I never feel influenced by them.  Don’t know why that is but it just is.
Have you ever given assistance to a struggling new writer?  Has another writer ever come to your aide?  How?
Many times I’ve had aspiring writers ask me for help by giving them my input on their work or answering their questions about author groups or publishers.  Sometimes they just need the encouragement to keep going when they feel like giving up.
I’ve had other authors come to my aide many times especially when I was dealing with writer’s block recently.  In fact, my partner in crime, Tina Donahue, told me something I took in an valued so much I dedicated Harmonica Joe’s Reluctant Bride to her.  It was a simple but powerful sentence: write from your heart.  Another author and friend who believed in me when I didn’t and guided me in a different and right direction was Cheryl Pierson.
What do you consider your greatest accomplishments in your career so far?
The ability to not allow a bad review or a snarky remark eat at me, devour my confidence and throw me into the dark void where even my muse won’t go.
Getting published has certainly been a huge accomplishment.  I spent years working at it.
If you won the big lottery, what would you do with the money?  Would you give any of it to charity?  If so, which one?
I’d pay off my house and credit card (I only have one), give each member of my family a certain amount, put enough away to sustain me and then I would give the rest to The Humane Society of Charlotte, The ASPCA and The Defenders of Wildlife.
What is the best advice you want to give to a new writer?
Write every day, read like an addict and absolutely never give up.
If you could choose an animal for a mascot, what animal would it be?  What do you admire about this animal?  Do you feel you have qualities similar to this animal?  If so, what are they?
The Bear is in my animal totem.  It is supposed to allow a person to have the ability “to know” like intuition.  I like the Bear’s tenacity and protection of its young and I sure wouldn’t mind hibernating for winter.  Sometimes I have these qualities but not always.
If money, education and fear factors were set aside, what three careers would you like to attempt other than writing?
A photographer for National Geographic.
A bush pilot in Alaska.
A professional violinist or bagpiper.
If money, talent and fear were no object, what big adventure would you like to have?
I’d love to sail around the world and stop in all the ports I love along the way.
What characteristics do you like to instill in your heroes? What characteristics do you feel are necessary for a good heroine?
I want heroes that are intelligent, empathetic and, although sensitive, ready to get down and dirty to tenaciously defend those he loves.
No one likes a whimpy, dumbass for a heroine.  I like to write heroines that want something desperately and aren’t afraid to throw all their effort into getting it. I do, however, want them to have compassion and empathy for others.  No self-involved beauty queens, thank you.
If you had the power to change two things in the world, what would those two things be?
Global warming and dependency on fossil fuel
If could have a super power for a day, what would it be?  Why?
Teleportation
I hate driving and I’m afraid of flying and, to top it all off, very impatient.

A haunted house, a trunk and a date with destiny.

Blurb:
Joseph Wilding left his prosperous Virginia ranch and his grieving father to live in obscurity and guilt over his brother’s death until he marries Lola instead of Callie McGraw, the woman he abhors but whose life he was attempting to save.
Lola discovers a warp in time in an old trunk when she falls into 1910.  She finds herself married to Joe, a stranger shadowed by secrets.  Mistaken for Callie McGraw, a thief and a woman of ill repute, Lola finds her life is threatened by a scoundrel who believes she stole his money and only Joe stands between her and death.
With danger threatening all around and secrets keeping them apart, can Joe and Lola find their destiny together or will time and circumstance forever divide them?

EXCERPT:
Joe swallowed another bite of bacon and downed two gulps of coffee before he pinned her with a dark eye.  He suppressed the grin that wanted to ride up on his lips at her funny way of talking.  “I don’t know what you’re talking about with all that zip code and meteorite lingo.  Right now, we have some things to take care of, like Argos, here.  I promised Jake Medford I would take a look at his lame mare and then I have to go into town and settle a few things, like talking to the sheriff about what happened yesterday.”  Another gulp of coffee.  “Oh.  By the way, you might want to close the bedroom curtains when you change clothes or wash up in our bedroom from now on.  We had a visitor last night and he probably enjoyed watching our intimacies in bed.”
That certainly got her attention.  She sat up straight and stared at him with panic in her expression.  “Oh, my God.  Who do you think it was?  Was it that awful man who attacked me in the bar?  That awful Taylor person?”  She placed her hands over her face.  “Holy crap, I can’t believe it.  That man saw me naked, having sex with you.  I could just die.”  Her hands flew up to cover her face.
Laughter sprung up out of his chest before he could stop it.  “Well, it was just sex after all,” he threw her words back at her.
Her hands withdrew from her face to fist in her lap.  Eyes narrowed and her lips thinned into a straight line as anger replaced embarrassment.  Drawing her spine up straight, she looked him straight in the eye.  Ascendo tumm.
“Up yours?  What the hell does that mean?”  A grin spread across his face when Lola sucked in a breath of astonishment.
“I forgot you know Latin.”  Her head bowed and a momentary deflation of her expression caught Joe’s eye.  A fraction of a moment later she glanced back up to meet his eye and said with defiance, “It means up your ass.  In this case, that would be close to your shoulders, seeing as that’s where your ass sits.”
Joe just couldn’t help it.  That defiant look, her captivating reply.  God, what a woman.  He burst out laughing at her insult.
I love you.  He thought it but he sure as hell wasn’t about to say it.
